Why I write.

Why do I write? Why do I write about addiction, MY addiction?

Because I have to.

I've discovered that silence is the very best way to internalize the guilt and shame that sandwich addiction, even in recovery. Silence is the very best way to think you're the only one suffering, no one will understand, no one else is going through it, themselves. Silence is the very best way to keep addiction a shameful secret, a thing that happens to bad people, who do bad things.

I'm breaking my silence, for me. For my benefit. But, I'm also breaking my silence for the addict reading this right now, for the loved one of an addict who is lost and scared. If my story can help even one person find their peace, then it's worth it. I'll shatter my silence, until there's nothing left to say.
